The Art of the Day-to-Day – Anne’s Story

The story of Rapala lures originates from Vääksy, Finland, where Lauri Rapala carved his first lure from cork. Later on, that prototype became the Original Floater – the lure that conquered the world. To this day, many of our fish-catching baits are made in Vääksy, in the Rapala lure manufacturing unit. Among the long-time workers in Vääksy is the Marketing and Production Assistant Anne, who’s tackling many of the day-to-day tasks necessary to keep the production rolling around the year.

What does a Marketing and Production Assistant at the Vääksy factory do?

Like the factory manager once put it, a little bit of everything! I check the invoices, make sure everyone has proper work clothing, oversee that our showroom has enough lures on display, fill in the menus, and take care of all the running errands that pop up. It changes from day to day, which, if you ask me, is a great thing.

What brought you and Rapala VMC together?

It all started in 1984 when I came here and asked if there were any jobs available. At the time, I was working at a convenience store nearby, but my daily commute was getting tricky due to changes in the public transport system. So, I thought I’d try my luck and come here – and I was hired on the spot! Back then, a lot of the assembly work could be done from home, which suited me well since it gave me a chance to take care of the kids while working. But in the late 90s, I thought it was time to get back to the factory! For the last three years, I’ve been the Marketing and Production Assistant. 

What’s the best part of your job?

That’s easy: the versatility! It keeps things interesting. But that’s not to say I didn’t enjoy the clearly defined tasks – I wouldn’t have been here for such a long while if I hadn’t liked it here!

So, how about that fishing? 

I’ve been big on ice fishing ever since I was a little kid! In fact, I’ve set up a spot where people can borrow ice fishing gear. I’ve got augers, rods, reels, and ice fishing stools – if you’re in the neighborhood and in need of ice fishing tackle, you know who to call!

If you were a Rapala lure, which one would it be?

I’d be the Original Floater. It’s been here for a long time – just like me!
