At Rapala VMC we acknowledge that our sport depends on clean fishing waters, nature and healthy fish stocks. That is why we encourage our units globally to take part in “grassroot projects” that contribute to topics important to us such as restoring rivers or preventing litter from entering the waterways. We call this concept Rapala Do Good. In Finland Rapala VMC collaborates with Keep the Archipelago Tidy Association and The Association for Stream Restoration – Virho ry: two important organizations that share the same goal with us.

In June a big group of Rapala VMC employees from our Finnish locations participated in a river restoration project at Hitolanjoki, Southern Finland. The project was done in cooperation with Virho ry. The goal of Virho is to revive stream waters and protect the living conditions of the entire water ecosystem as widely as possible. The concrete actions the organization takes to further these goals are for example building fish paths, dismantling dams and restoring streams or rivers, like in our project.

Rapala’s and Virho’s collaboration day aimed to improve spawning areas for endangered wild brown trout. Especially in Southern Finland, a major factor standing in the way of the growth of wild trout populations is the poor quality of the spawning grounds. In practice the restoration means, that the river environment is brought closer to its natural state with different kinds of obstacles, changing water flow and so on. So, during one summery day our group of hard-working Rapala people carried a few tons of gravel and rocks into the river according to our experts’ instructions to enhance the flow and to create suitable base for spawning! This day was not only for an important cause, but it turned out to be also great team building event (and a bit of a workout).

We can’t wait to continue our cooperation with Virho ry and to see, if the trouts find their way to the new spawning areas!
